Untitled (look like us, talk like us, think like us, pray like us, love like us), 2019
ABOUT THE WORK
A new commission for Art Night 2019, Kruger’s first large scale outdoor commission in 15 years will occupy a large site on Town Square Gardens in central Walthamstow. The work is a new example of Barbara Krugers conceptual practice that is questioning its viewers about consumerism, individual autonomy, desire and power.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Barbara Kruger is known for her combination of type and both still as well as moving image that conveys a direct cultural critique. Her work often examines stereotypes, the behaviours of consumerism as well as less obvious mechanisms of power that operate within contemporary society. Often displayed in public spaces her work has appeared on billboards, busses, cards, posters and in public parks and train station platforms, occupying the commercial spaces she is critiquing.
ABOUT THE VENUE
Town Square is situated between Walthamstow tube station, the central bus station, the Mall and the market and as a hub it is used by traders, festivals and protesters alike.
